The Silence You Did Not Fill

This message is for the meeting where something was said, the room waited, and you nearly supplied a meaning you had not been given

Eight people. A back room with a radiator that ticks. Tuesday, because it has always been Tuesday.

Someone spoke. Not loudly, and not for long, maybe fifteen seconds of it, in a language nobody in that room had ever learned. And then it stopped, and the radiator ticked, and eight people sat in a silence that had a shape to it.

Ray felt the sentence arrive.

That is the honest way to describe it, and Ray is an honest man, which is the whole reason this story is worth telling. A sentence turned up in him. It was a good sentence. It was the sort of sentence that gets said in rooms like that one and nobody ever questions it. The Lord says He sees your labor and He is not slow. It had the rhythm. It had the shape. If he had stood up and said it, six of the eight would have nodded and one would have cried and it would have been fine.

And Ray sat there, seventy one years old, with the sentence sitting on the front of his tongue, and he asked himself one question that he has asked himself for forty years and never once been able to get around.

Did I get that, or did I make that?

He did not know. That is all. Not that he suspected it was false. He simply, genuinely, did not know which of the two it was, and he had no way of finding out from the inside.

So he did not say it.

He sat there instead, in a room that was waiting for somebody to be useful, and he let the silence keep going, and it went on far too long, the way silences do when eight people are all being brave in a circle. Somebody's chair creaked. The tea went cold in Ray's hand.

And here is the thing he could not have told you at the time, and only worked out later.

That silence was not empty. Something was in the room the whole way through it, and it was not humiliation, and it was not failure, and it was certainly not nothing.

The Silence You Did Not Fill

He gives the meaning too

I love Ray for that, and I want to tell you why before I tell you anything else.

He was not being cautious because he thinks God has gone quiet. He was being careful because he thinks God actually speaks, and a person who believes that is exactly the person who dreads putting words in His mouth. The trembling is a sign of reverence, not a sign of unbelief. If you are the one who worries about making it up, you are almost never the one who does.

So hold the hunger. Do not let anybody talk you out of wanting to understand. Wanting to know what God is saying is not presumption, it is love, and the letter to Corinth treats it as completely normal.

Therefore let the one who speaks in a tongue pray that he may interpret.1 Corinthians 14:13

Look at what that sentence does with the meaning. It does not say work it out. It does not say have a go. It says pray. The interpretation is asked for, from Someone who has it, by somebody who does not. Which means the meaning has an owner, and the owner is not the room, and He is not stingy with it either. He is the God who gives words and then gives the sense of them, because a word nobody understands does nobody any good and He knows that better than we do.

And the meaning has an owner, and the owner is not the room. The written word says pray that he may interpret rather than work it out, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my paragraph who brings that to a man who has held one back room for forty years.

And He gives the meaning as well as the words. The word has Him give the sense along with the sound, and the Spirit is the one who supplies it rather than leaving anybody to manufacture it under a room's eyes.

And then Paul does the thing that took the weight off Ray's chest, forty years too late.

If there is no one to interpret, let each of them keep silent in the church, and speak to himself and to God.1 Corinthians 14:27 to 28

There it is, in the text, in black and white. A room where the meaning does not arrive is a room Scripture has already thought about. It has a plan for that room. The plan is quiet, and the quiet is not a scandal.

Do you know what that means for Ray, and for you?

Nothing was missing that night. Not the Spirit. Not the faith. Not the something-that-other-churches-have. A meeting where nobody could tell you what a thing meant is a meeting the New Testament describes without a single word of embarrassment.

Now, people who love the same Lord hold different views about how all of this runs today, and I am not going to sort that out for you at the end of a hard week, because it is not what you came here carrying. What you came here carrying is smaller and more personal than that argument. You want to understand something. You are afraid of manufacturing it. And you have been quietly wondering whether the fear itself disqualifies you.

It does not. It qualifies you to be trusted.

And nothing about you is under review for a silence you would not fill. The word says there is now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, and the Spirit supplies that to somebody who has read a quiet room as a verdict on himself.

Here is the plainest thing I know about this: an interpretation you supply is worth exactly what you paid for it, and a room that gets told a manufactured thing walks out heavier and does not know why. The honest empty hands protect people. They are not a failure of faith, they are a service, and the God who sees in secret saw a man in a back room refuse to be useful at the cost of being true.

And what was said is meant to be understood, and you can wait for that. The word writes a rule for the room where nothing comes and makes that rule quiet, and the Spirit is the one who makes waiting a service rather than a shortfall.

The breakthrough

So here is the moment, and it is not a technique.

Stop trying to generate what only He can give, and start asking Him for it out loud, which is what the verse actually tells you to do. Ask, plainly. Ask the way you would ask a person in the room with you, because that is nearer the truth than anything else you could picture.

And in the same breath, settle the other half now, tonight, before you are standing in a quiet room with eight people looking at you. Settle that you are willing to be given nothing. Not resigned. Willing. Because a person who has already made peace with empty hands is the only person who can be trusted to speak when their hands are full.

That is the freedom in this. You are not the source, so you are not the one who has to produce. You are the one who asks and then tells the truth about what you have got.

And He gives the meaning as well as the words, and you can wait for that, and you are willing to not be given one. The word puts the asking in your mouth and the giving in His hands, and the Spirit bears witness with your spirit rather than requiring you to produce a sentence.

Declare this over yourself

Say these sitting, hands still open. The right to ask like this is not a rank you reached: it is yours in Christ, given to you, and you are speaking as somebody He listens to rather than somebody applying to be heard. And we leave the outcome to Him. He may give the meaning today and He may not, and neither one is a verdict on you.

  1. Meaning, you belong to God and not to my guessing, so I ask for you and I do not manufacture you. The Word of God says the one who speaks is to pray that he may interpret, and asking is an honest and complete thing to be doing with my mouth.
  2. Silence, you are not my enemy and you are not empty. God, You are in the quiet as truly as You are in the speaking, and I would rather sit in Your silence than fill a room with my own noise.
  3. God, You give the meaning as well as the words, because what You say is meant to be understood. In the name of Jesus I ask You for it, and I am content to stand here with nothing today, since empty hands held out to You are never wasted hands.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
