The Night Nobody Said Anything

This message is for having sat through a silence that nobody filled, and having carried it since as a failure that was somehow yours

Karim has been carrying one silence for six years and he has never told anybody it was his.

It was an ordinary evening. About thirty people. Somebody spoke, in the way that happens in that room, and then it finished, and the room waited.

And nothing came.

Not immediately, which would have been normal. Not after twenty seconds. Not at all. The wait went on long enough to become its own event, and then somebody started a song, gently, which was the kind thing to do, and the evening went on and the moment closed over.

Nobody discussed it afterwards. Nobody was upset. As far as he knows, not one other person in that room has thought about it since.

Karim has thought about it constantly.

Because during the silence something moved in him. Not words. Not a meaning. A pressure, a sense of being the one who ought to be doing something, a certainty that the gap was his to fill.

And he had nothing. He stood there with nothing in his hands for what he now estimates was about ninety seconds, and then the song started, and he has understood ever since that he failed that room.

He is forty-seven. He still goes. He is completely reliable and nobody has any idea.

And what he has quietly done, over six years, is stop being available for that pressure at all. He arrives late enough to sit at the back. He does not close his eyes in that part of the evening. He has arranged himself so that whatever moved in him that night has no room to move in again.

You may know that silence.

Maybe you were in a room that waited. Maybe you felt it was yours. And maybe you have been arranging yourself carefully ever since.

The Night Nobody Said Anything

The instruction you never read

There is a verse in the middle of Paul's ordering of exactly that situation, and it prescribes what happened that night, and it prescribes it as the correct outcome rather than the failed one.

But if there be no interpreter, let him keep silence in the church; and let him speak to himself, and to God.1 Corinthians 14:28

If there be no interpreter, let him keep silence.

That is a rule for the case where nothing comes. Paul anticipates it. He is not surprised by it and he does not treat it as a breakdown; he writes a procedure for it, which is what you do for a thing that is going to happen regularly.

And the procedure is silence. Not a substitute. Not somebody having a go. Not the room being carried by whoever is willing to speak, because that is the actual danger in a room like that and it is what the whole chapter is written to prevent.

Which means the ninety seconds you have been carrying as a collapse is the outcome the text specifies, and the room did the right thing, and so did you.

And the silence you sat in was the instruction rather than the failure. The written word writes a rule for the case where no interpretation comes and makes that rule silence, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my paragraph who brings that to a man who has re-run ninety seconds for six years.

And He gives the meaning as well as the words. The word puts both the speaking and the understanding on His side of the table, and the Spirit is the one who supplies the second rather than requiring a man in a room to manufacture it.

What the pressure was

Now the part you have never named, because you have only ever had one explanation for it.

Something moved in you during that silence. You are sure of it and I am not going to talk you out of it, and it is the reason none of this has settled.

But notice the two things you fused that night, at speed, under pressure, at the front of a waiting room.

Something is moving in me. That was true. Therefore I am the one who is supposed to close this. That was an inference, and you made it in about four seconds, and you have never once examined it since.

There are other readings of the first sentence, and several of them are ordinary. A person who cares about a room feels a waiting room. A person who loves God feels the weight of a moment when everybody is listening. Being moved is not the same as being assigned, and nothing about that pressure came with a name attached.

You have been living for six years off a conclusion you reached in four seconds while standing up.

And you were moved rather than commissioned. The word says God is not the author of confusion, but of peace, in the same chapter, and the Spirit is the one who lets a man feel a room deeply without that meaning the room was his to close.

And nothing about you is under review for ninety seconds of empty hands. The word says there is now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, and the Spirit supplies that to a man who has sat at the back on purpose for six years.

And nothing here settles what that room should do

Let me be plain about the size of this, because a man could take an article like this as a ruling and it is not one.

Nothing here decides what your gathering should or should not do, or how it should run, or what belongs in it. Those are real questions, argued by people who love that room as much as you do, and this page does not settle them.

And nothing here says go back and be available for the pressure. It does not say close your eyes, or sit further forward, or make yourself reachable, because that would be trading one instruction you invented for another one I invented.

What is on offer is only that empty hands are in the text, written down, as the right answer for the case where nothing has been given.

And you are permitted to have nothing and be right. The word makes silence the prescribed move where no interpretation is present, and the Spirit is the one who makes that a permission rather than the lowest of the available outcomes.

The breakthrough

So set the ninety seconds down, because the text calls that outcome correct.

If there be no interpreter, let him keep silence in the church. The word writes a rule for the exact evening you have been carrying and makes the rule silence, and the Spirit is the one who makes that a procedure rather than a collapse.

And He gives the meaning as well as the words, and what was said is meant to be understood, and you can wait for that. The word keeps both halves on His side, and the Spirit bears witness with your spirit rather than requiring you to close a gap you were never handed.

And be willing, tonight, to not be given one.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Ninety seconds I have re-run for six years, you were the outcome the text prescribes and you were never a failure of mine. Scripture says if there be no interpreter, let him keep silence in the church.
  2. Conclusion I reached in four seconds while standing up, get out of this courtyard in the name of Jesus. God is not the author of confusion, but of peace, and there is now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus.
  3. Lord, You keep the speaking and the understanding both, and empty hands are written down as right. He gives the meaning as well as the words, what was said is meant to be understood, and I can wait for that.
