Keoni has understood a thing about his own family for eleven years and it has never once survived his mouth.
He can hold it whole. It is not vague. It has edges and a shape and he can turn it over, and when he does, several things that have happened in that family over about forty years arrange themselves into a single picture that makes sense of all of them at once.
And then he tries to say it.
He has tried four times. Once to his sister, once to a cousin, twice to a man he trusts.
Every time, what comes out is a smaller and flatter thing. It arrives as an opinion about somebody's character, or as a complaint, or as something that sounds like blame when there is no blame in it at all. He hears himself and knows immediately that the thing on the table is not what he is holding.
And every time, the other person's face changes. Not badly. They are kind. But he watches them file it as Keoni having a theory about the family, and then the moment is over and he is standing there with the whole thing still intact in him and no way to get it across.
He is fifty-three.
And what has settled on him in the last couple of years is a conclusion. If he cannot say it, he probably never had it. A thing you cannot put into words is probably not a thing; it is a feeling with a good opinion of itself.
He has more or less stopped trying. And the picture has not faded at all, which is the part that keeps him up.
You may know that wall.
Maybe you also hold something whole and hear it come out small. Maybe faces have changed. And maybe you have decided that the failure of the words is a verdict on the thing.

What the verse calls the problem
There is a verse in the middle of Paul's instructions about being understood, and it names the failure precisely, and the failure it names is not the one you have been blaming.
So likewise ye, except ye utter by the tongue words easy to be understood, how shall it be known what is spoken? for ye shall speak into the air.1 Corinthians 14:9
Ye shall speak into the air.
That is a phrase about transmission. It describes something real being said and not landing, and the whole weight of the sentence falls on the wording, on words easy to be understood, and never once on whether the speaker had anything.
Read the assumption underneath it. Paul is talking to people who genuinely have something. He is not accusing them of having nothing; his entire problem in that chapter is that they have plenty and none of it is getting across the room.
Which means speaking into the air is treated in the text as a wording failure, in people who possess the thing, and that is the exact category you have quietly removed from your own case.
You have had four transmission failures and concluded you had nothing to transmit.
And what has failed is the wording rather than the thing. The written word puts the whole weight on words easy to be understood, in people the writer assumes are carrying something real, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my paragraph who brings that to a man who has held one picture whole for eleven years.
And He gives the meaning as well as the words. The word names both halves in one sentence and never merges them, and the Spirit is the one who supplies each of them rather than requiring you to have arrived with both.
Naming what those four times cost
Now the part I am not going to soften, because you have been very reasonable about this for eleven years and reasonable is not the same as healed.
Four times you brought out something you had carried alone, and four times you watched it be received as smaller than it was, by people you love, who were kind about it.
Being kindly misunderstood is worse than being argued with. An argument means the thing landed and was met. What you got was your family's gentleness applied to a diminished version, and you had to stand there and accept that gentleness knowing it was aimed at something that was not what you said.
That is a specific injury and it has a specific effect: it teaches a person that opening their mouth converts what they have into something lesser, and after four repetitions the mouth stops on its own.
You did not decide to stop trying. It stopped.
And what closed was a mouth that had been hurt rather than a gift withdrawn. The word says a wounded spirit who can bear, which is asked and not answered, and the Spirit is the one who lets that count as an injury even where everybody was kind.
And nothing about you is under review for eleven years of holding it. The word says there is now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, and the Spirit supplies that to a man who has never once used what he sees against anybody in that family.
And this does not make you right
Let me be plain, because everything above could be read as a warrant and it is not one.
Nothing here says your picture is correct. I do not know your family and I have not seen the forty years, and a thing being whole and durable in a man is not proof it is true. Those are different claims and I am not going to hand you the second one.
And nothing here says go and deliver it. If the words are not given, they are not given, and going out with a version you have hammered into shape yourself is exactly the failure this whole subject is fenced against.
What is on offer is only that the four failures were about transmission, and that they settle nothing about what you are holding, in either direction.
And you are permitted to hold something you cannot yet say. The word separates the meaning from the wording in one sentence, and the Spirit is the one who makes the gap ordinary rather than a verdict.
So stop reading four failures as an answer, because the verse calls that a wording problem in people who have something.
Except ye utter by the tongue words easy to be understood, how shall it be known what is spoken? The word puts the failure in the wording, in people the writer assumes are carrying something, and the Spirit is the one who keeps those two apart where you had merged them.
And He gives the meaning as well as the words, and what was said is meant to be understood, and you can wait for that. The word names both halves and hands both to Him, and the Spirit bears witness with your spirit rather than requiring you to arrive with the sentence already made.
And go and ask for the wording, and be willing to go without it.
Declare this over yourself
- Four times my own mouth made it smaller in front of people who love me, you were a transmission and you were never a verdict on what I am holding. Scripture says except ye utter words easy to be understood, ye shall speak into the air.
- Conclusion that a thing I cannot word is a feeling with a good opinion of itself, get off this wall in the name of Jesus. A wounded spirit who can bear is a question left open, and there is now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus.
- Lord, You named the meaning and the wording in one sentence and never once merged them. He gives the meaning as well as the words, what was said is meant to be understood, and I can wait for that.
