Margaret was given the meaning of something thirty-four years ago and she has never had another one.
It was plain and it was specific and it was right, and about nine people were present, and one of them talks about it to this day.
What she has never told anybody is that it was the only one.
Not the first of a series. Not the beginning of anything. One event, in a kitchen, when she was thirty-eight, and then thirty-four years of ordinary life in which nothing of that kind has happened again.
And in those thirty-four years she has become, in that community, the woman you go to.
They come for advice, which she gives well, out of seventy-two years of paying attention. They come for prayer. And a certain number of them come, without ever saying it directly, for the other thing, and they sit at her table with a look on their face that she has learned to recognize from the doorway.
She has never once claimed anything. That is the part she holds onto. She has never said she has this.
She has simply never said that she has not.
And over thirty-four years the not-saying has done the work of a claim, because a silence in the face of a belief is where the belief lives, and she has known that for a long time and has not been able to find the moment.
She is seventy-two. The woman who still talks about it is eighty-one. And there is a young mother who came last month with the look, and Margaret gave her good plain counsel out of her own head, and the young mother left holding it as something else.
You may know that table.
Maybe you were given one thing too. Maybe you never claimed anything. And maybe the silence has been doing the claiming for years.

What he said before he said anything else
There is a man in Daniel who is about to do the very thing he was brought in for, in front of the most powerful person in the world, and the first thing out of his mouth is a correction of the record.
But as for me, this secret is not revealed to me for any wisdom that I have more than any living.Daniel 2:30
Not for any wisdom that I have more than any living.
He is not being modest. Modesty would be saying it afterwards, quietly, when it cost nothing. He says it first, at the top, before the content, to the man who has the power to reward or kill him, in the exact moment when letting the assumption stand would have been most useful.
And look at how completely he closes it: more than any living. Not more than most. He rules out any margin at all between himself and every other person alive.
Which means the correction you have not been able to find a moment for is the thing he does before the interpretation, as part of it, and it is not an aside. It is where he starts.
And the correction belongs at the front rather than nowhere. The written word puts the disclaimer first, in the room, before the content, at maximum cost, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my paragraph who brings that to a woman who has been looking for the moment for thirty-four years.
And He gives the meaning as well as the words. The word takes the source out of the man and puts it in God in the same breath, and the Spirit is the one who supplies it rather than requiring a faculty anybody carries about with them.
What the silence has been doing
Now the plain accounting, because you have been half-doing it in your head for years and it will be easier out here.
You never lied. Hold that. In thirty-four years you have not said one word that was not true, and I am not going to pretend otherwise to make a point.
But a person who is believed to have something, and who does not correct it, is not neutral. The belief keeps working, and it works on everything you say, and the good plain counsel you gave that young mother last month left your kitchen weighing considerably more than it did when it was in your head.
That is the actual harm, and it is not to your conscience. It is to her. She is carrying advice as revelation, and if it turns out to be wrong she will not think Margaret was mistaken. She will think something much worse and much harder to recover from.
And the reason you never corrected it is not vanity. It is that there was never a natural opening. Nobody ever asked you the direct question. You cannot stand up in a room and announce a negative, and every private moment where it might have fitted also had somebody in front of you who needed something else more.
Thirty-four years of that is not a character flaw. It is what happens when a correction has no natural home.
And what has stood is a belief with no owner rather than a lie of yours. The word says let your yea be yea, and your nay, nay, and the Spirit is the one who makes that a shape you can act in rather than a verdict on the years.
And nothing about you is under review for thirty-four years of not being asked. The word says there is now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, and the Spirit supplies that to a woman who has given honest counsel at that table her whole life.
And the one thing was real
Let me be plain about the other side of it, because a woman could read this and decide the whole event was imagination and that would be a different lie.
The thing that happened when you were thirty-eight happened. I am not taking it off you. It was specific, it was right, nine people saw it, and God gave it.
What Daniel's sentence establishes is not that such things do not happen. He is standing there having just had one. It establishes where it came from, and that having received one does not install anything in the person who received it.
And nothing here rules on anybody's practice or on what should happen in any gathering. That is not this page's business and it never was.
What is on offer is a sentence you can say at your own table, which puts the record straight without taking anything away from what God did in that kitchen.
And you are permitted to say plainly what you do not have. The word has him open with the disclaimer at the moment it costs the most, and the Spirit is the one who makes that ordinary rather than a demolition of thirty-four years.
So put the record straight at the table, and keep everything that actually happened.
This secret is not revealed to me for any wisdom that I have more than any living. The word puts the correction first, before the content, in front of the one person it was costly to say it to, and the Spirit is the one who makes that part of the work rather than an aside.
And He gives the meaning as well as the words, and what was said is meant to be understood, and you can wait for that. The word puts the source in God, and the Spirit bears witness with your spirit rather than installing a faculty in anybody.
And say it to the young mother first.
Declare this over yourself
- Thirty-four years of a correction that never had a natural home, you were a belief with no owner and you were never a lie of mine. Scripture says this secret is not revealed to me for any wisdom that I have more than any living.
- Weight my counsel leaves this kitchen with, get off this table in the name of Jesus. Let your yea be yea, and your nay, nay, and there is now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus.
- Lord, he put the correction first, before the content, where it cost him the most. He gives the meaning as well as the words, what was said is meant to be understood, and I can wait for that.
