Marion worked out about a year ago that she has not simply been in a room since some time in her forties.
She is fifty-eight. It came to her at a christening, of all things, when she caught herself doing the sweep as she came through the door: who is here, who is with whom, who is not saying something, where the tension is, which two people have had a conversation before this that neither of them is mentioning.
Four seconds. Before her coat was off.
And she stood there holding a present and thought: I do not remember choosing to do that.
It was useful once. It has been useful, genuinely, several times over the years, and one of those times mattered a great deal to a family she loves. She would not undo any of it.
But it does not switch off now, and she has slowly become tired in company in a way she never used to be, and about eighteen months ago she started declining things. Not many. Enough that her daughter has noticed and said something.
The reason she gives is her back, which is a real thing and is not the reason.
The reason is that a room costs her something now that it did not cost her at thirty, and the cost is not sociability. It is that she cannot be a guest. She arrives working.
You may know that doorway.
Maybe you also do the sweep. Maybe you also cannot recall deciding to start. And maybe you have begun, quietly, to prefer smaller gatherings and told people it was something else.

Attention is directed rather than suppressed
There is a verse at the end of Philippians that people use as a rule about avoiding bad thoughts, and it is not structured as an avoidance instruction at all.
Whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.Philippians 4:8
Think on these things.
It is a positive instruction. Paul does not say stop noticing the other things, and he does not offer a technique for not seeing. He gives attention a destination.
Which matters enormously for you, because you have tried the other thing. You have tried to stop scanning, more than once, and it does not work, and it cannot work, because a faculty that has been running for fifteen years does not respond to being told to stop.
But attention can be pointed. That is a different mechanism and it is the one the verse uses.
And notice the list. True, honest, just, pure, lovely, of good report. Six categories, all of them things that are actually present in a room, none of them requiring you to pretend anything.
You are already an unusually good noticer. Nothing about that has to change. What can change is what half of the noticing is aimed at.
And your attention is directable even when it is not stoppable. The written word gives a destination rather than a prohibition, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my paragraph who makes that a workable instruction in a woman who has already tried simply stopping.
And you are not required to stop seeing in order to rest. The word never once tells the reader to perceive less, and the Spirit bears witness with your spirit rather than asking you to be less than you are.
What the sweep is actually for
Let me say something about the fifteen years, because I do not want you to hear this as a correction of the faculty.
The sweep has done real work. One of those times mattered a great deal to a family you love, and you would not undo it, and you should not.
But a sweep is a defensive instrument. It is looking for what is wrong, which is a perfectly good thing for an instrument to look for, and it is why it makes you tired: a person scanning for threats is doing security work, and security work is tiring even when nothing is found, and especially when nothing is found, because nothing found means the shift never ends.
Fifteen years of shifts with almost no incidents is not a light load. It is the heaviest possible version of that load.
And you are permitted to be a guest. The word says come unto me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest, and the Spirit is the one who makes rest a thing a person is invited into rather than something they have to earn by having found nothing.
And nothing about you is under review for declining a few invitations. The word says there is now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, and the Spirit supplies that to a woman who has been giving her back as the reason.
The other half of the room
Here is the practical thing, and it is small enough to do at the next thing you go to.
The sweep takes four seconds and catalogues what is wrong. That is one half of a room.
The other half is genuinely there and you have not been cataloguing it. Who is glad to be here. Who has made an effort. Which two people are easy with each other. Who brought something. Which child is being looked after by somebody who did not have to.
Same faculty. Same four seconds. Different half.
And a person who does both is not less perceptive than a person who does one. She is more perceptive, and considerably less tired, because she is no longer working a security shift in her sister's front room.
And you are able to aim the same faculty at what is lovely and of good report. The word lists six categories that are actually present rather than imagined, and the Spirit is the one who supplies the turn that no amount of resolving produces on its own.
So do not try to stop. That has failed twice already and it will fail again.
Point it instead.
Whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report, think on these things. The word gives attention a destination rather than a prohibition, and the Spirit is the one who makes that a real instruction to a woman who has been trying the wrong verb for years.
And He lets you see what is there. The word never asks you to perceive less, and the Spirit bears witness with your spirit rather than requiring you to arrive at a christening switched off.
And take one breath at the door, which is the whole of this category's practice.
Declare this over yourself
- Sweep I have run at every door since my forties, you were useful and you have become a security shift that never ends. Scripture says think on these things, and it gives attention a destination rather than a prohibition.
- Reason I have been giving about my back, get out of this house in the name of Jesus. Come unto me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest, and rest is an invitation and not a wage.
- Lord, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report. He lets me see what is there, and seeing it clearly does not make me the one who names it out loud.
