Seeing Is Not Sentencing

This message is for the wrongness you felt in a room and could not name, and have not been able to put down since

She was thirteen minutes into a perfectly ordinary evening when she knew.

Nothing had happened. The kitchen was warm. There was a dish on the hob and a dog under the table and a boy doing homework at one end with his hood up, and her friend was telling a long funny story about a delivery driver, and the whole room was working exactly the way a room is supposed to work. And she sat there with her hands round a mug and thought, clearly, in words: something is wrong in this house.

She could not have told you what. She still could not, years later, and that is the part that made her doubt herself for most of a decade. It was not a tone of voice. It was not a look between two people. There was no evidence anywhere in that kitchen and she would have lost any argument about it in eleven seconds flat.

So she said nothing. She laughed at the delivery driver in the right places. She helped with the plates. She drove home along the ring road with the windows down and told herself, out loud, in the car, that she was becoming the sort of person who imagines things, and that she had better stop.

Four years later she found out she had been right.

And here is what she says about it now, which is not what you would expect. She does not say I should have spoken up. She says something stranger and much more useful. She says: I spent four years arguing about whether I had seen it, and not one hour asking what the seeing was for.

I think you know that room. Maybe it was a house, maybe a workplace, maybe a church you loved. You walked in and something in you went quiet and alert at the same time, the way an animal does, and you have been carrying it ever since with nowhere to put it down, and somewhere along the way somebody made you feel that having noticed was itself a kind of accusation.

It is not. And I want to give you back the seeing while taking something else off you entirely.

Seeing Is Not Sentencing

The lamp and the warrant

The nine are listed in a single paragraph, one after another, with no ladder anywhere in the sentence, and yours sits in the middle of it as ordinary as bread.

To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common benefit.1 Corinthians 12:7

To each. Not to the gifted few. Not to the advanced. Paul is in the middle of dismantling the exact ranking that people have spent centuries rebuilding on top of his list, and the sentence he uses to do it is the sentence that includes you.

And then look what your one is actually called. In the list it is the ability to distinguish between spirits. Not to hunt. Not to expose. To tell apart. It is the faculty a person uses in the dark to know that this is the door frame and that is the stair, and it is given for the common benefit, which means it is given for the good of the people in the room and not for the building of a case against them.

So the gift is a lamp. It has never once been a warrant.

And what you were handed is a lamp rather than a warrant. The written word calls it the ability to distinguish between and gives it for the common benefit, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my paragraph who brings that to a woman who argued with herself for four years.

And He lets you see what is there. The word says to each is given the manifestation of the Spirit, and the Spirit is the one who distributes rather than sorting a room into the advanced and the rest.

That distinction is the whole message and it is a hundred years overdue, because the harm this gift has done has almost never come from the seeing. It has come from the sentence that got added straight afterwards. Somebody perceives something real, and within a minute they have named it, assigned it to a person, said it out loud to a third party, and set a thing running that they cannot stop.

I am not going to teach you to name what is in another human being. Not because I am being cautious with you, but because that is not what the faculty does, and every time it has been used that way somebody has ended up standing in a room full of people who were suddenly all looking at them. You saw something. You did not receive a verdict. Those are two entirely different objects and only one of them was ever handed to you.

And seeing it clearly does not make you the one who names it out loud. The word turns the Spirit's speaking toward building up and encouragement and comfort, and the Spirit is the one who finishes what you are holding rather than leaving the naming in your hands.

Hear what the Spirit's speaking is for, in Paul's own summary of it a chapter later: the one who prophesies speaks to people for their building up and their encouragement and their comfort. Building up. Encouragement. Comfort. That is the direction of travel. If what you are holding cannot be turned in that direction, it is not yet finished, and the finishing is God's work and not yours to force.

So what do you actually do with it?

You take it to Him first, and you take it to Him alone. That is the whole of the first move. Not to your friend, not to the group, not to the person who would find it most interesting. What you perceived is intercession material long before it is ever conversation material, and most of what any of us perceives is never meant to become conversation at all. It is meant to make one person pray for another person with unusual accuracy, quietly, for a long time, and never be thanked for it.

And you can stop auditing yourself. That is the second thing, and for you it might be the bigger one. You are not going mad and you were never dangerous. You have a lamp. The last four years of arguing with yourself about whether the lamp was real were four years of the most tiring debate a person can have, and you can put it down now, because the Spirit who distributes these things does it exactly as He decides and He did not make a filing error when He came to you.

And nothing about you is under review for four years of auditing a lamp. The word says there is now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, and the Spirit supplies that to a woman who told herself in a car that she had better stop.

The breakthrough

So we are going to separate the two things right now, in this room, and you are going to feel how much lighter one of them is without the other.

Hold up what you saw. Do not describe it, do not defend it, do not put a name on it. Just hold it, the way you would hold a thing you had found in a field and did not understand.

Now hand the naming back. Say it out loud if you can: I saw it. I am not the one who names it. And notice what happens to your chest when the second half goes.

Because you have been carrying two things and you were only ever given one. The seeing is yours and it is a gift and it is for the good of everybody in the room. The verdict was never yours, it was never asked of you, and setting it down is not cowardice. It is the shape the gift was always meant to have.

And He lets you see what is there, and seeing it clearly does not make you the one who names it. The word divides the perceiving from the prosecuting in the plainest possible terms, and the Spirit bears witness with your spirit rather than handing anybody a verdict.

Declare this over yourself

Say them out loud, slowly, with the breath first. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so this is not you asserting something about yourself: it is an ambassador saying what the King has already said over you. What He does with what you have seen is His to decide, and He answers in His own way.

  1. Doubt, you are dismissed from this seeing. The Word of God says the manifestation of the Spirit is given to each one for the common benefit, so I stop auditing the lamp He lit and I carry it steadily.
  2. Verdict, you do not belong to me and I am putting you down. In the name of Jesus I hand the naming back to the Judge who is qualified for it, and I keep the part that was actually given to me.
  3. Jesus, You are the Head of the body, so the wrongness I felt in that room goes to prayer and not to gossip. What I perceive I use for building, encouragement and comfort, or I hold it in silence before You.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
