The Bitterness Of Having Been Right

This message is for the eleven years you said nothing and were right the whole time, and the thing that has grown in you since it all came out

Kalani said nothing for eleven years and then it all came out and he has not been the same since, and not in the way anybody would expect.

He had known. Not details, and he could never have described it, but he had a settled unwillingness about a certain arrangement in a place he loved, and he carried it from about 2013, and he said nothing to anybody except in prayer.

He was right. When it broke, two years ago, it broke roughly the way he had never quite been able to articulate.

And people came to him.

That is the part he did not anticipate. Three or four people, at different times, said versions of you knew, didn't you. One of them apologized to him, which he found unbearable and could not say why.

And what has grown in him since is not satisfaction. It is something with a sour taste that arrives when those years come to mind, and it has a specific shape, and the shape is this: I carried that alone for eleven years and none of you would have listened if I had said it.

That sentence is true. That is what makes it dangerous. It is not a distortion he could argue himself out of.

He is fifty-two. It has been two years since it broke. And he has noticed that he is slightly different in that place now, in a way he does not like and cannot seem to reverse.

You may know the sour taste.

Maybe you also carried something and were right. Maybe somebody apologized to you and it did not help. And maybe what has grown since is not what you thought vindication would feel like.

The Bitterness Of Having Been Right

The word is root, and the point is timing

There is a warning in Hebrews that uses a farming image, and the value of it is that it is about a stage rather than about a state.

Looking diligently lest any man fail of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up trouble you, and thereby many be defiled.Hebrews 12:15

Root. Springing up.

The image is early. A root is the part before anything is visible, and springing up is the moment it becomes visible, and the instruction is to be looking at exactly that stage, which means the whole warning is aimed at people who do not yet think of themselves as bitter.

Which is you, two years in, with something sour that arrives occasionally and a sentence that happens to be true.

And note the second clause, which is the one that should get your attention: and thereby many be defiled. Not and thereby you be defiled. The damage is described as spreading, which means a root of bitterness is not a private condition and never stays one.

And what has grown in you is a root and it is at the stage the warning is aimed at. The written word puts the looking at the springing up rather than at the full growth, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my paragraph who makes that reach a man who would not currently call himself bitter.

And you are not being accused of anything by being told to look. The word says looking diligently, which is a task given to people in good standing, and the Spirit bears witness with your spirit rather than pronouncing on your condition.

The sentence is true and that is the problem

Let me deal with the sentence itself, because it is the engine.

I carried that alone for eleven years and none of you would have listened.

Both halves are true. You did carry it alone. And they almost certainly would not have listened, because unnameable perception about an arrangement is not listenable-to and you know that better than anybody, which is precisely why you said nothing.

So it cannot be dismantled by being argued with. It is not a lie you can correct.

What can be examined is what you are doing with it, because a true sentence can be used as an accusation, and this one is being used as one. Every time it arrives, it convicts a group of people of a failure they were never given the opportunity to commit.

They did not refuse to listen. They were never asked. You made a decision, for good reasons, that they should not be asked, and the sentence you are carrying quietly charges them for the consequences of your own correct decision.

And you are able to hold a true sentence without using it as a charge. The word says charity thinketh no evil, which is not about accuracy but about what a person does with what they hold, and the Spirit is the one who supplies that toward a room that never had the chance to fail.

And nothing about you is under review for eleven years of silence. The word says there is now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, and the Spirit supplies that to a man who found an apology unbearable and could not say why.

Why the apology was unbearable

Now the thing you could not explain, and I think it is worth having.

An apology from somebody who did not know is a debt being paid that they do not owe. It puts you in credit for something they had no part in, and some accurate part of you registered that as false and rejected it, and that rejection is to your enormous credit and is the healthiest thing in this whole account.

You do not want to be owed. Which means the root has not gone deep, because a man in whom bitterness had properly established itself would have taken the apology and enjoyed it.

That is worth knowing at two years in.

And you have not gone as far into this as you fear. The word says looking diligently lest any root spring up, and the Spirit is the one who lets a man look at his own second year without concluding the worst about himself.

The breakthrough

So do the looking, which is what the verse actually asks and which is not the same as being accused.

Lest any root of bitterness springing up trouble you, and thereby many be defiled. The word aims at the early stage and warns about spread rather than about private feeling, and the Spirit is the one who makes that a task rather than a verdict.

And He lets you see what is there. The word puts charity thinketh no evil alongside the seeing, and the Spirit bears witness with your spirit rather than requiring you to pretend the eleven years were easy.

And use the breath for the sentence, because the sentence is where this either goes down or goes deeper.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Sour taste that arrives with those eleven years, you are a root and you are at exactly the stage the warning is aimed at. Scripture says looking diligently lest any root of bitterness springing up, and springing up is early.
  2. Sentence I have been using as a charge, get off this shore in the name of Jesus. They were never asked, because I decided they should not be, and charity thinketh no evil.
  3. Lord, there is now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus. He lets me see what is there, and seeing it clearly does not make me the one who names it out loud.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
