They All Look At Me

This message is for the fact that your family has decided you are the one who prays when something serious happens, and the way the room turns to you, and what that has done to your praying

Emiliano knows the exact moment it happens and it happens every time.

Somebody says something serious. The room goes quiet in the particular way rooms do. And then, without anybody saying a word, everybody looks at him.

Not unkindly. There is no pressure in their faces; they love him and they are frightened and they are turning toward the person the family has decided is the one who does this.

He does not remember being appointed. It happened somewhere in his thirties, by increments, and by now it is settled to the point where a cousin's wife who has only been in the family four years does it too.

And here is what it has done, which he has never said out loud.

He can no longer pray in front of them.

He can talk. What comes out is fluent and warm and it comforts people and he has become genuinely good at it over twenty years. But somewhere in there he stopped asking God for anything in those moments and started addressing the room while facing the other way.

He knows the difference. He can feel himself doing it. He does it because a room that is looking at you needs something, and what it needs arrives faster than an actual prayer does.

He is fifty-one.

And what he has noticed more recently is that this has started leaking. He is less able to pray plainly on his own than he was ten years ago, as though the public form has slowly become the only form he has.

You may know that turn of the heads.

Maybe you are also the one in your family. Maybe you also know exactly what you are doing when you open your mouth in those rooms.

They All Look At Me

The first thing Peter says to a staring crowd

There is a moment in Acts where something has just happened and a crowd comes running, and they are all looking at two men, and the first thing Peter says is not about the event.

And when Peter saw it, he answered unto the people, Ye men of Israel, why marvel ye at this? or why look ye so earnestly on us, as though by our own power or holiness we had made this man to walk?Acts 3:12

Why look ye so earnestly on us.

He addresses the direction of their attention before he addresses anything else. Not the miracle, not the theology, not the opportunity. The looking.

And notice the phrase he uses for what they are assuming: by our own power or holiness. He names both of the things a staring crowd attributes to the man at the front, and he removes them in one clause before going on to speak.

Which is what has never happened in your family in twenty years. The looking has never once been addressed. It simply established itself and then hardened, and you have been operating inside it without ever being able to say the sentence Peter says in about four seconds.

And what they are looking at was never your own power or holiness. The written word has Peter dismantle the assumption before he says anything else, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my paragraph who makes that reach a man who has been carrying a room's attention for twenty years.

And you are not the one they should be looking at. The word puts the question about the looking first, before any explanation, and the Spirit bears witness with your spirit rather than confirming an appointment nobody remembers making.

What the public form has done to the private one

Now the leaking, because that is the actual damage and it is the thing you noticed most recently.

Twenty years of speaking in a register that has to work immediately, in front of frightened people, has trained a particular kind of prayer into you: fluent, warm, complete, and audible.

And it has trained out the other kind, which is halting and unfinished and does not have to comfort anybody.

That is not hypocrisy. It is practice, doing what practice does. A man who plays only in front of audiences for twenty years finds that he cannot play alone in the same way, because the thing he has been rehearsing is a performance and the performance is now the whole of his fluency.

Which means the fix is not to stop doing the family rooms. They need somebody and you are good at it and there is nothing wrong with warm words in a frightened kitchen.

The fix is that you have not had a private form in a long time, and it has to be rebuilt separately rather than reformed out of the public one.

And you are able to ask plainly when nobody is listening. The word says when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret, and the Spirit is the one who makes that a different room rather than a better version of the same one.

And nothing about you is under review for twenty years of comforting people. The word says there is now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, and the Spirit supplies that to a man who has been good at something and has been quietly bothered by how good.

What you could say in the room

One practical thing, offered lightly, because I am not going to rearrange your family from here.

Peter's sentence took four seconds and it did not stop him praying afterwards.

There is a version available to you that is smaller than a speech. Something like: I do not have anything special, and I will ask, and so can any of you. Said once, warmly, in the moment when the heads turn.

It will not change the family. It might change what happens in you while you speak, because it puts the looking somewhere else out loud before you begin, and a man who has said that is in a different position from a man who has not.

And you can expect Him without carrying the room's expectation. The word has Peter name the assumption and set it aside before he goes on, and the Spirit is the one who makes that a usable four seconds rather than a theological point.

The breakthrough

So rebuild the private one separately, and let the public one be what it is.

Why look ye so earnestly on us, as though by our own power or holiness. The word puts the question about the looking before anything else and names exactly what a crowd attributes, and the Spirit is the one who makes that available to a man in a kitchen.

And He still does this and He is not obliged to do it for you today. The word puts the doing in Him and keeps it out of the man at the front, and the Spirit bears witness with your spirit rather than requiring you to produce something for a room.

And do the small thing, alone, where nobody is looking at all.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Twenty years of heads turning, you appointed me without a meeting and I have never once addressed it. Scripture says why look ye so earnestly on us, as though by our own power or holiness, and Peter said it before anything else.
  2. Public form that has become the only form I have, get off this courtyard in the name of Jesus. There is now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, and a private one can be built separately rather than reformed out of you.
  3. Lord, when I pray, let me enter into my closet and shut the door and pray to my Father which is in secret. He still does this and He is not obliged to do it for me today, and I can expect Him without putting Him on terms.
