The corridor smells of floor polish and toast, and he is holding two coffees he does not want.
His sister comes out of the door at the end with the folder under her arm and she is walking differently. He can tell from thirty feet away. She gets to him and says the word clear, and then says it again because the first one did not have enough air behind it, and he puts both coffees down on the windowsill because his hands have stopped working properly.
Then the registrar comes out after her, kind, unhurried, and says the sentence. There was probably a shadow on the first film. It happens. Movement, or the angle, or the way the contrast pooled. Nothing to worry about now.
And he says thank you, and he means it, and something in his chest goes flat like a tire.
He has been praying for thirty years. Thirty years of Tuesday nights and other people's names on a list in his own handwriting. He has prayed over car journeys and job interviews and a friend's marriage and his own father's last week. And he could tell you a hundred good things that have come, and here is what he would say if you sat with him long enough and he trusted you: not one of them, not one in thirty years, was a thing that could not be explained by Tuesday.
The job came, and the manager liked him. The marriage held, and they worked at it. The scan came back clear, and there was probably a shadow on the first film.
He drives home. He is glad. He is so glad he could sing. And underneath the gladness is the thing he has never once said out loud, and it has got a shape now, and the shape is a bargain.
Just once. Give me one I cannot explain, and I will never ask again.
He does not know when he started saying that. He knows he is saying it now, at a roundabout, with the indicator going.
And now I am going to stop saying he.
Because you have prayed for a long time. You have been faithful in a way nobody has ever thanked you for. And somewhere in the last few years, without a decision, without a rebellion, the asking picked up a second sentence, and the second sentence has an if in it.
You are not a cynic. That is what makes this hurt. You still believe. You would defend it in any room. But you have begun to hold your hope out at arm's length, so that when the explanation arrives on Tuesday it will not get you in the chest, and holding anything at arm's length for years is exhausting, and you did not sign up to be tired in this particular way.

Who decides, and why it is a mercy that it is not you
There is a line in Paul's letter to Corinth that sits at the end of the famous list, and it is the line that never gets quoted, because a list is easier to teach than a sentence about God's freedom.
All these are the work of one and the same Spirit, and He gives to each one individually, just as He decides.1 Corinthians 12:11
Read the end of it slowly, because it is doing two things at once and both of them are for you.
Just as He decides.
The first thing it does is take the weight off you. If the deciding sits with Him, then it does not sit with you, and it never has. Which means the thirty years of explained answers are not a report card. They are not a measurement of you. There is no line in that verse about the quality of the asking, the volume of it, or how much of it you got right, and I want to say plainly what a lot of teaching has quietly implied to people like you: nothing you failed to feel or to muster is the reason. That is not how the sentence is built and it is not who He is.
And the deciding sits with Him and never once sat with you. The written word ends the list with just as He decides and says nothing at all about the quality of the asking, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my paragraph who brings that to somebody who has been reading thirty years as a report card.
And He still does this and He is not obliged to do it for you today. The word puts the working in one and the same Spirit and the deciding in Him, and the Spirit is the one who supplies rather than answering to a bargain.
The second thing it does is harder and better. It says He is a Person and not a mechanism.
A mechanism you can put on terms. You feed it the right thing and it produces. That is what a bargain is, and a bargain is what your prayer picked up somewhere around year twenty-two, and it did not feel like a fall. It felt like being reasonable. But you cannot put a Person on terms without ceasing to expect Him and beginning to audit Him, and those are two different postures of the same body.
Here is the difference, and it is the whole message.
Expectation stands on His character. Demand stands on my conditions. They can look identical from outside. They pray in the same words. But expectation can receive an answer that came with an explanation attached and still call it Him, and demand cannot, because demand needed the answer to arrive in a particular envelope.
And that is the other thing worth saying about the shadow on the first film. You have been counting only what could not be explained. Consider what that does. It means every good thing that arrived through a person, a doctor, a phone call, a change of heart, a Tuesday, got quietly moved into a column marked coincidence, and the column marked God has been kept nearly empty by a rule you made and nobody gave you.
And nothing about you is under review for a second sentence with an if in it. The word says there is now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, and the Spirit supplies that to somebody who has been faithful in a way nobody has ever thanked them for.
He still does this. He does it in ways that leave a mark on the record and in ways that leave nothing but a clear scan and a kind registrar, and He is not obliged to do either of them for you today. Both halves of that are good news, and you need both, because a God who owes you is a God you have to manage, and you are far too tired to manage anybody else.
So here is the turn, and it is not a demand made of you either.
You are not being asked to work up a feeling of certainty. You are not being told that if you believe correctly the next one will come with no explanation attached, because that would just be your bargain with the names swapped, and it would put the whole weight back on you, and this message is not going to do that to you.
You are being handed one thing: permission to expect Him again, out loud, without the second sentence.
And you can expect Him without putting Him on terms. The word makes Him the one who decides individually, which is a sentence about a Person and not a mechanism, and the Spirit is the one who makes expectation possible without a bargain underneath it.
Expect Him the way you expect morning. Not because you have negotiated with the sun, and not because you can produce it, but because of who keeps it. And let the answers come however they come, in a registrar's kind voice or in something nobody can account for, and let both go in the same column, which is the column with His name on it, and which has been far fuller than you have been allowing.
Thirty years is not a wasted archive. It is a long friendship you have been reading as a ledger.
And He still does this, and He is not obliged to do it for you today, and you can expect Him without putting Him on terms. The word keeps the deciding with Him in the plainest words available, and the Spirit bears witness with your spirit rather than owing anybody an envelope.
Declare this over yourself
Speak these where you usually pray, in the same chair, at the same hour. This standing is not borrowed and not imagined: it is yours in Christ, and you speak as one who represents the King rather than as one who is bargaining with Him. And every word of it is spoken under His will and never over it, because how He answers and when belongs entirely to Him, and the outcome is His.
- Expectation, you stay in this house and you do not leave the room when a thing gets explained. The Word of God says the Spirit gives to each one just as He decides, so I keep my eyes open and I keep my terms to myself.
- Demand, get out of my praying, in the name of Jesus, and take the bargain with you. God, You are not on trial in my kitchen and I am not Your auditor, and I would rather have You than a receipt.
- God, You still do this and You owe me nothing today, and I am glad of both. I am counting every good thing into Your column, the ones with a reason attached and the ones without, because You are the Giver and Tuesday never was.
