The Hour You Cannot Get Back

This message is for the one hour you believed something completely, and the years since of trying to get back to that hour and failing

The car stopped on a gravel road in February, about four miles from anything, and Dorcas sat in it with the heater dying and no bars on the phone.

She was not brave. She should say that first, because she has told this badly for years by leaving it out. She was not brave and she did not pray a good prayer. She said the word help into a windshield that was fogging over, and then something happened that she has never once been able to explain to anybody.

She stopped being afraid.

Not calmed down. Not managed. She sat in a cold car on an empty road in the dark and knew, the way you know your own hand, that she was held. Held. That was the word that arrived and it arrived from outside her. She was not talking herself into anything, because she had tried that at the beginning and it had not worked at all. This came from somewhere else, and it came whole, and for about an hour she was the most certain person alive on that road.

A truck came around the bend eventually. That part is ordinary and it is not the part she keeps.

The part she keeps is the hour. And the part she cannot say out loud in a room full of church people is this: she has never got back there. Not once. Twenty years of prayer, of study, of every conference and every good book, and she has never again in her life believed anything the way she believed it in that car.

So she has drawn the obvious conclusion, and she has been carrying it ever since. She thinks the hour was the high water mark of her faith, and that everything after it has been a long slow slide, and that whatever she had that night she has since let go of.

I want to take that conclusion off you. Because it is the wrong reading of the best night of your life.

The Hour You Cannot Get Back

You did not generate it, so you cannot have lost it

There is a list in Paul's letter that has been used for about a hundred years to tell people what they do not have. Nine things named in one paragraph, and somewhere in the middle of it, quietly, this one:

To another faith by the same Spirit. All these are empowered by one and the same Spirit, who distributes to each one individually just as the Spirit decides.1 Corinthians 12:9 and 11

Sit on the last five words a minute. Just as the Spirit decides.

Not just as the reader decides. Not just as the reader's discipline earns. Not just as the reader's hunger unlocks, or their fasting, or their study, or the number of hours they have put in since. The distributing is done by Someone, and the deciding belongs to Him, and it is done individually, which means it is done with a face in view and a night in view and a gravel road in view.

And the distributing was done by Someone, and the deciding belongs to Him. The written word ends the list with just as the Spirit decides, individually, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my paragraph who brings that to somebody who has read every quiet year since as a report on themselves.

Now hold that against your hour.

You have spent years believing you had something and lost it. Read the verse again. You never had it in the sense you have been mourning. It was handed to you. It came into your hands for a particular hour, for a particular thing, and the hand it came from was not yours, and when the hour was over it went back where it came from, and that is not a failure. That is the shape of a gift.

Here is why the difference matters so much. If the hour was something you generated, then its absence is a report on you, and every ordinary Tuesday since has been evidence in a case against your soul. But if the hour was something He gave, then its absence is simply a report on what He has and has not handed out lately, and He has never once explained His timing to anybody, and He is not obliged to start with either of us.

I have watched people spend a decade trying to reconstruct a night. They go back to the same songs. They go back to the same posture, the same words, the same time of day, as though the certainty were a combination and they had merely forgotten the order. And what it does to them is terrible, because every attempt that does not produce the surge is read as one more proof of decline.

You cannot reproduce it. That is not your defect. It is the gift's own nature. It arrives, it does its work, and it goes, and the going is not a withdrawal of God from your life. It is the difference between a gift and a possession.

And that faith was handed to you for that moment. The word puts the giving in the Spirit and the deciding in Him, and the Spirit is the one who supplies it rather than requiring a believer to reproduce a night.

And its going is not your collapse. The word says He knoweth our frame, He remembereth that we are dust, and the Spirit is the one who makes that cover a decade of trying to reconstruct an hour.

And listen. The faith you are living on now, the plain kind, the kind that got you up this morning and put you in front of these words, is not the poor relation of the hour in the car. It is not the leftovers. Paul lists the surge among the gifts precisely because it is not the ordinary equipment, and ordinary equipment is what a life is actually built with.

You have not slid. You have been walking. Those look the same from the inside and they are not the same at all.

And nothing about you is under review for twenty ordinary years. The word says there is now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, and the Spirit supplies that to somebody who has been reading their own Tuesdays as evidence.

The breakthrough

You are holding your hour with a closed fist, and you have been holding it so long that your hand hurts.

So put it down. Not the memory. Keep the memory, tell it at tables, it is true and it happened and it was Him. Put down the obligation you attached to it: the idea that a real believer would have kept the surge, and that its going is the story of your decline.

It was His to give. It was given. It went back to the One it came from, and He was not disappointed in you when it went, and He is not comparing you this morning to a woman in a cold car twenty years ago.

Open your hands. There is nothing in them and there was never supposed to be.

And that faith was handed to you for that moment, it was His to give, and its going is not your collapse. The word says the Spirit distributes to each one individually just as He decides, and the Spirit bears witness with your spirit rather than grading you against a night.

Declare this over yourself

Say these where you can hear yourself. The right to say them is not something your good hour earned and your quiet years canceled. It is Christ's authority, delegated, and because you are in Christ it has been given to you the same on an ordinary Tuesday as on the best night of your life. You speak it under not my will, but Thine, because what He hands out and when is His to decide, and however He answers, no silence from heaven is ever a verdict on you.

  1. Hour on the gravel road, you were a gift and you were never a standard. God, You handed me that faith for that night, and a gift does not become a test I have to pass twice.
  2. Absence, you are not my collapse and you are not my verdict. The Spirit gives to each one just as He decides, so I stand on what He decided, in the name of Jesus.
  3. God, You are the Giver and I am the given to, so my hands open and stay open. I thank You that the faith I could not reproduce was never mine to keep in the first place.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
