The Chair Outside Theater Three

The chair is molded blue plastic, fixed to a metal beam, and directly opposite the doors marked THEATER THREE. A paper cup has gone cold between two hands.

Behind those doors, someone beloved is undergoing surgery. The corridor carries rubber soles, trolley wheels, and sentences spoken too quietly to understand. Yet for one hour, the person in the chair is not afraid.

It is not courage built from information. No favorable report has arrived. The certainty simply rests there, complete and unforced: God is here. Whatever happens belongs to Him. The hour passes inside a peace too solid to explain.

Years later, that person keeps returning to the chair in memory. Not because of the surgery alone, but because certainty has never come in quite that way again. If this is you, the memory has become an accusation: perhaps real faith visited once, and your failure to recreate it means unbelief won afterward.

A gift is given, not generated

Paul lists faith among manifestations of the Spirit in 1 Corinthians 12. He is writing to people who already belong to Christ, and he repeatedly names one Spirit as the giver. The gift is distributed by the Spirit according to His will. That grammar takes manufacture out of your hands.

“To another faith by the same Spirit.”1 Corinthians 12:9

This does not mean ordinary trust disappears. Christians live by faith, pray in faith, and cling to God’s character. Yet Paul can also speak of a particular manifestation of faith, given in a particular way. The waiting-room hour need not become the minimum standard for every day afterward.

You are not an unbeliever because the unusual certainty did not become permanent. First Corinthians 12:9 is the written ground, and the Holy Spirit identifies Himself as giver. A gift that arrives without manufacture does not become evidence against the recipient when its moment passes.

The pit is exhausting because repeated attempts have tried to reproduce the conditions. The same verse. The same kind of prayer. Perhaps even the same posture, hands around a cup, shoulders lowered deliberately. Each attempt becomes a test, and every ordinary anxious thought feels like a failed result.

You have the Holy Spirit now, not merely the memory of a feeling. Scripture says the manifestation is given by the same Spirit, and He anchors this truth Himself: His presence is not measured by whether your nervous system repeats one extraordinary hour.

The surgery’s outcome must not be used to validate the certainty. A favorable outcome does not prove the feeling was produced correctly, and a painful outcome would not prove faith failed. God’s sovereignty is not a laboratory result. Medicine, skilled care, prayer, fear, and peace may all occupy the same story without turning the patient’s future into anyone’s spiritual score.

You are released from summoning what was freely handed to you. First Corinthians 12:9 names faith as the Spirit’s manifestation, and the Holy Spirit keeps the gift under His own authority. Its going is not your collapse.

There is mercy in the episodic nature of the gift. If that level of certainty became an obligation, grace would become performance. Instead, the old hour may be remembered with gratitude while today is permitted to feel ordinary. The gift served without becoming a master.

Nothing in this message requires a position in debates about whether particular gifts continue in every age. The text can be received without adjudicating another believer. The reader’s ache is simpler: an experience happened, it cannot be recreated, and its absence has been misnamed as personal unbelief.

Christ does not ask you to live inside the waiting room forever. He meets you in today’s room, where faith may feel quieter, questions may remain, and no surge arrives. His finished work stands when emotion rises and when it does not.

The cold cup is not a relic with power. The chair is not a formula. They are witnesses to one hour in which grace took a particular shape. A witness tells what happened. It does not demand repetition.

Memory can remain warm without becoming a measuring stick. The old certainty may still comfort, and gratitude for it need not be diluted. What changes is its job. It no longer stands at the door of today asking for credentials. It sits inside the story as evidence that God knew what one hour required.

Today may require another shape of grace: patience without clarity, prayer with a shaking voice, or simply the willingness to remain. None ranks below certainty. The gifts are given by one Spirit for His purposes, not arranged as a ladder by which believers prove their height.
