I Can Take Any Of It Apart In Thirty Seconds

Yvette was handed something at twenty-six that was simply not true, and she has been sharpening ever since.

It was not cruel. Nobody was hurt. A woman she barely knew told her, with enormous confidence and real warmth, a thing about her life that was specific and wrong and that Yvette carried around for about two years before she quietly let it go.

What that fortnight-long confidence did to her was permanent, and it did not look like damage. It looked like discernment.

She started reading. She read properly, the way she reads everything, and she got very good at it. She can tell you what the words mean in the original. She can show you where a chapter turns and why the fences are where they are. She can take almost anything anybody says in this category and show you, kindly and in about thirty seconds, exactly which part of it came from where.

And she is usually right. That is not the problem. She is right most of the time and her precision has protected several people.

She is forty-three.

Eight weeks ago a young woman in her church said something to her, briefly, in a corridor, about Yvette herself. It was said without confidence, almost as an apology, and it was over in fifteen seconds.

Yvette had it filed before the girl had finished. Not unkindly. She was warm to her. But it went into the drawer where all of it goes, and the drawer is labeled well-meaning, and there is no other drawer.

She was driving home eleven days later when she understood that the thing the girl said was true. Not approximately. Exactly, and about a part of her nobody in that church knows about, and there is no ordinary way the girl could have known it.

And her first thought, before anything else, was: I did not even hear it.

You may know that drawer.

Maybe you were handed something false once. Maybe you got extremely good at taking things apart. And maybe you have started to notice what else is going in the drawer.

Both halves of the instruction

There are two sentences in a row at the end of a letter, and you have one of them perfectly and you have never once had the other.

Despise not prophesyings. Prove all things; hold fast that which is good.1 Thessalonians 5:20-21

Prove all things. You have that. You have it better than most people alive and you built it honestly out of one bad fortnight and fifteen years of reading.

Despise not. That one is missing, and it is written first.

And look at the third clause, because it is the one your system has no slot for: hold fast that which is good. The proving is not the end of the process. It has an output. Something is supposed to survive the test and be kept.

A test with no keeping is not a test. It is a filter set to reject everything, and it will pass exactly as much material as a closed pipe.

Which means the instruction you have been obeying is one third of a three-part sentence, and the two thirds you are missing are the parts that put something back in your hands.

And the proving was always supposed to end with keeping. The written word says despise not first, and hold fast that which is good last, and puts the testing between them, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my paragraph who brings that to a woman who understood eleven days late in a car.

And He speaks and you can carry it plainly. The word names strengthening and comfort as the entire purpose of this, and the Spirit is the one who supplies it rather than requiring anybody to have been correct the first time you were handed something.

What that woman actually cost you

Now the accounting, because you have never done it and you should.

You have always described that episode as a lucky escape. You were young, somebody was confidently wrong, you carried it two years, you put it down, and you learned. That is how you tell it and there is a small laugh in the middle of it.

Here is what it actually cost. It set your threshold, permanently, at an age when you were not choosing thresholds, and it set it in the only direction available to a person who has just been embarrassed by their own credulity.

And a threshold set that way does not distinguish. It cannot. It was built by one event and it screens by resemblance, and everything in this category resembles that event, because that event is the category as far as your nervous system is concerned.

Fifteen years of reading did not correct it. It armed it. You now have, on top of a reflex you did not choose, a genuinely excellent set of tools for justifying it in thirty seconds.

And what is operating is a threshold rather than discernment. The word says the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness unto him, and the Spirit is the one who shows a careful woman where her own carefulness came from.

And nothing about you is under review for fifteen years of the drawer. The word says there is now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, and the Spirit supplies that to a woman whose precision has genuinely protected people.

And nothing here asks you to stop testing

Let me be plain, because you have spent this entire article waiting for me to ask you to be less rigorous and I am not going to.

Nothing here says loosen it. Prove all things is in the verse and it is an imperative and your reading is a real service and the fences you can point out are really there. Keep every bit of it.

And nothing here asks you to receive a future from anybody, or to hand one out. Not an outcome, not a date, not a word about anybody's health or marriage or death, because that is not this and never was, and the fence exists exactly so that being wrong stays survivable, which is what nobody offered you at twenty-six.

What is on offer is a second drawer. One that has something in it.

And you are permitted to keep the ones that survive you. The word ends the instruction with hold fast that which is good, and the Spirit is the one who makes that an output rather than an optional extra after a test you never let anything pass.
