I Can No Longer Tell Which Ones Are Mine

Ruth was right about a thing once, out loud, and she has been paying for it for eleven years.

Not paying in any way anybody would recognize. Nobody has been unkind to her. It is the opposite of that, and the opposite is the problem.

What happened is that she said something to a woman at a kitchen table, plainly, in about four sentences, and it was true, and the woman wept, and told two people, and those two told others.

And now Ruth is somebody people come to.

They do not ask for much. Mostly they sit down and they wait, in a friendly way, with a cup, and there is a small open space in the conversation where something is expected to go.

And for the first few years she nearly always had something, and she said it, and it was fine.

But she is seventy-one now, and the space still opens every time, and she has begun to notice that she fills it. Not dishonestly. She would know dishonesty and she would not do it. She fills it the way anybody fills a silence they are responsible for, out of forty years of knowing people and reading faces and understanding almost immediately what a person at her table is actually there about.

That is not nothing. It is often useful and it is nearly always kind.

But it is not the other thing. And what frightens her is that she can no longer tell, in the moment, which one she is doing.

She has never said this to anybody. There is nobody to say it to who would not either reassure her too quickly or take it too seriously.

You may know that table.

Maybe you were right once too. Maybe a space opens now when you sit down with people. And maybe you have stopped being able to audit yourself in the middle of it.

The half of the verse nobody quotes

There is a short verse about this in the middle of Paul's instructions, and it has two halves, and the second half is the one that has been missing from your kitchen for eleven years.

Let the prophets speak two or three, and let the other judge.1 Corinthians 14:29

And let the other judge.

Not the speaker. The other. Somebody else in the room, whose actual job is to weigh what was said.

Sit with the shape of that for a moment. The design has two parts and they are given to two different people. One carries the thing. Somebody else weighs it. Paul builds that into the ordinary running of a church as though it is obvious, because to him it is.

Which means the checking was never meant to happen inside the person speaking. It was never their function. The reason you cannot audit yourself in the middle of it is not that your discernment has failed; it is that you have been asked to perform, alone and simultaneously, a job the text gives to two people.

And nobody asked you to do it that way on purpose. It happened because your kitchen is not a room with an order in it. It is a table, and a cup, and a woman who came because somebody told her to.

And you are doing two jobs that were given to two people. The written word splits speaking from weighing in one short sentence and hands the weighing to somebody else, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my paragraph who brings that to a woman at a table with nobody sitting on the other side of that task.

And He speaks and you can carry it plainly. The word puts the carrying and the weighing in different hands, and the Spirit is the one who supplies what is carried rather than requiring you to certify it on the spot.

What the good years actually were

Now the thing you have been quietly deciding about yourself, because it is not true and it has been getting heavier.

You have begun to suspect that the first few years were the real ones and that you have been drifting since.

Look at it plainly. In the first years the space opened and something was there. Now the space opens and forty years of knowing people is there first, because it is faster, and because it is always available, and because a woman sitting across from you with a cup is a person you can read in about nine seconds.

The reading is not counterfeit. It is a real and good thing and you built it honestly over a lifetime, and half the comfort you have given in that kitchen came out of it.

What has happened is only that it arrives first now and it looks the same from inside. That is a speed problem, not a spiritual one, and it would happen to any woman of seventy-one who had spent her life paying attention to people.

And what arrives first is your own kindness rather than a corruption. The word says out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh, and the Spirit is the one who makes that ordinary rather than an indictment of forty honest years.

And nothing about you is under review for eleven years of that table. The word says there is now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, and the Spirit supplies that to a woman who has never once said anything at that table she did not believe.

And there is no verdict being asked of you

Let me be plain, because you are braced for me to tell you to stop, and I am not going to.

Nothing here says shut the kitchen. Those women should keep coming and you should keep making the tea, and most of what you have given them across eleven years is the ordinary comfort of an older woman who pays attention, and that is worth what it costs.

And nothing here asks you to hand anybody a future. Not an outcome, not a date, not a word about anybody's health or anybody's marriage, because that is not this and it never was, and the fence in this chapter is what keeps the stakes survivable.

What is on offer is smaller and it is a change in the room rather than a change in you: one person who knows what you are doing and is permitted to say I do not think that one was it.

And you are permitted to be weighed by somebody rather than weighing yourself. The word assigns the judging to the other, in the plainest possible words, and the Spirit is the one who makes that a relief rather than a demotion.
